Some good quotes from the article:
From a press release issued Tuesday: "Sen. Brandes' motivation behind the legislation is a desire to adjust speed limits to be more in line with actual driver behavior. If adopted, traffic engineers would be able to extend the maximum allowable speed on some roadways to 75 miles per hour if determined that the roadway was safe enough for such a speed."
"While I had some early reservations to adjusting speed limits, my study of the research from the 17 other states that have already increased their speed limits above 70 miles per hour led me to believe that it is time for Florida to review this policy," Brandes said. "This legislation allows traffic engineers to make the decision to raise the speed limit on a roadway if they believe it is safe and advisable to do so."

Looking back at this year, Utah !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! because it made its Interstates safer and lawmakers from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and now Florida all want 75 mph maximum speed limits. Or in Michigan's case, even 80 mph. Notice a trend? It's because that's what people drive comfortably on Interstates that aren't congested. Expect enforcement of these new limits to be tighter since they are more reasonable speed limits.

Nice seeing our lawmakers wanting to raise our speed limits to match global standards. Did you know India, China, Brazil, and other less-developed countries than ours have 75 mph (converted from 120 km/h) maximum speed limits? Yup, about time we raise ours...
Also thought I'd mention today a lawmaker in Pennsylvania !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Please, anywhere but the stretch of I4 from downtown Orlando to Disney. We do not need these idiot drivers going even faster than they are now.

This highway development plan has also been referred to as the "Motorway Euthanasia Project".

I've driven Utah's 80 MPH zones. It's nice. The interesting thing to note is that folks aren't going 90 routinely. I think most people feel like 80 is pretty good. Michigan has a lot of areas that should be higher with long stretches of remote freeway. People forget how big Michigan is. The Great Lakes state is about 650 from the bottom of the Lower Peninsula to the tippy top of the UP.

Back in the 80s a friend of mine and I did the drive from Orlando, where we were stationed, to Key West. There are places that definitely need a higher limit. That drive took forever .

Wait! Hold the fucking phone! Do you mean to tell me that there is a politician - in Florida, nonetheless - who has based an opinion on empirical data and not some narrow minded political ideology?

Thank God someone in PA has some sense. The Turnpike, the most likely candidate for higher limits (I haven't yet read the linked article, forgive me) was designed for 100mph straights and 70mph corners. In the 50's. IN THE FIFTIES. Bias plies, live axles, lead sleds, and all. I've seen older cars than that on the turnpike, and you know what? They can't get up to those speeds, because it's so damn hilly anyways, so they go slower. It's about time we raise the limit. I don't hardly go above 65 anyways, because I'm a hypermiling cheapass, but it's nice to know that when I need to hit 75, it's still somewhat acceptable to do so.
Also, east of mile 246 on a weekday may as well be the autobahn. The one or two speed traps won't bother with people going under 85. (Source: my cruise control pegged at 85, radar going gonzo)

Indeed! It was modeled after the Autobahn and Merritt Parkway, with no limit when it opened, and a limit of 70 until the mid '50s.
Pictured here is one of many potential 100 mph straights.

This says you have to slow down to about 90 for the curves, so which is it???
